InternationalOn the trail of Francis I around the World

Québec
Zoom in

Québec

QuébecQuebec, capital of New France and cradle of French civilisation in North America.
Francis I was gifted with farsightedness when he commissioned Jacques Cartier in 1532 to "discover certain Islands and Lands where by all accounts there is multiplicity of gold.?The navigator from St Malo sailed 3 times to Quebec, in 1534, 1535 and 1541.
When all is said and done, the real treasure is the city of Quebec, now on UNESCO's prestigious List of the World Heritage. It has kept its historic charm through its old time-worn houses so reminiscent of the souvenirs of New France. In the heart of a superb natural site, close to the St Lawrence Lowlands and beside the rive named "St Lawrence" by Jacques Cartier, it welcomes millions of visitors attracted by its old streets, its historic tours, its churches and museums. You can admire the city throughout the year: in the summer, the natural tourist season; in the autumn , draped in a thousand different colours ; in the winter under a generous mantle of snow, with its carnival famous the world over ; and in the spring, for fishing and rambling. In 2008, Quebec will be celebrating its 400th anniversary and the festivities planned for that occasion will without doubt prove to be a historic event.
